You can spend one day exploring cities like Fresno and Clovis, and the next experiencing the outdoors. From lakes and canyons to wineries and walkable gardens, the outdoor scene here is underrated and seriously worth exploring. If you're looking to catch some fresh air and a new perspective, these spots are a great place to start.

Kings Canyon National Park

One of the most underrated national parks in California, Kings Canyon is just 90 minutes from Fresno. Expect towering cliffs and scenic hikes without the larger crowds during busy season. Bring your camera and your hiking shoes—this one’s worth the visit.

Forestiere Underground Gardens

Forestiere Underground Gardens is a hand-dug network of tunnels, citrus trees, and archways built right into the earth. The gardens are typically between 10-15 degrees cooler than ground level, they offer guided tours in English and Spanish, plus they have a wheelchair accessible route for visitors using standard wheelchairs. This makes it a must-see during any summertime California road trip.

Woodward Park

Woodward Park

If you’re staying close or in the city but still want fresh air and space to move, Woodward Park has you covered. With over 300 acres of trails, open fields, and views of the San Joaquin River bluffs, it’s one of the best spots in Fresno to stretch your legs, go for a walk, or catch a sunset. Location: 7775 N Friant Rd, Fresno, CA 93720 

Park Hours: summer times: 7am-10pm winter times: 7am-7pm

Entrance Fee: $5 per vehicle or $3 for vehicles with anyone 65 and older inside

Millerton Lake

If you’re into boating or just setting up a picnic by the water, Millerton Lake has space to roam and views that don’t disappoint. Only leashed dogs are allowed in the park, and designated trails are limited to service animals—so plan accordingly. Sunrise and sunset both hit different here, so take your time.

Old Town Clovis Walking Trail

The Clovis Walking Trails offer scenic, paved paths perfect for a morning jog, afternoon stroll, or a sunset bike ride. This dog-friendly walking trail goes through all of Clovis, making it a great way to get outside and enjoy the views. Our favorite time to walk/bike on the trail is in the fall and spring seasons. 

Shaver Lake

Shaver Lake

For mountain air and lake views, Shaver Lake is an easy day trip from Fresno. You can go horseback riding (available starting in May 2025), rent a boat, fish for trout, or just relax by the water with a cooler and some snacks. It’s a local favorite for a reason. Clovis Botanical Garden

Looking for something a little more chill? Clovis Botanical Garden is a low-key spot packed with native plants, pollinator gardens, and walking paths that are perfect for a slow stroll. The garden is soley operated by volunteers. Free admission for children and adults, they offer guided tours for groups of 10 for $5 per person. For more info on the gardens, go here.

Sip your way through Fresno County’s growing wine scene. With sunny patios and views of the vineyards, wineries here keep things relaxed and rooted in local flavor. A few to check out: Ziveli Winery, Cardella Winery, and Kings River Winery.

Tioga Sequoia Beer Garden

If beer's more your thing, you're in luck. Grab a seat outside at Crow & Wolf Brewing Company, Tioga-Sequoia Beer Garden, or Backyard Social Club with outdoor seating and a large oak tree providing shaded areas. Most spots are dog-friendly with rotating food trucks and live music in their outdoor spaces. Check websites for hours of operations.

Shinzen Japanese Garden

Need a peaceful reset without leaving the city? Shinzen Japanese Garden, tucked inside Woodward Park, offers seasonal beauty year-round—think koi ponds, bonsai, and quiet walking paths. There's always great scenery all year 'round, but our favorite times to visit are during the spring season to catch all the flowers blooming!

Farmer's Markets

If you're into picking up local produce, handmade goods, or just a good cold brew to wander with, markets like the Vineyard Farmers Market (open every Wednesday from 3pm-6pm, Saturdays 7am-12pm), River Park Farmer's Market (open every Tuesday night 5pm-9pm) or Old Town Clovis Farmers Market (Open every Saturday morning 9am-11:30am) are the places to be.
