Fresno County does winter differently. While the city stays mild with mostly clear skies and a comfortable chill, just a drive away, you’ll find snow-covered mountains like Shaver Lake, China Peak, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park. It’s a great mix—explore the city in comfort, and if you want to experience the snow, it’s right there waiting for you. Packing these must-have essentials will make sure you’re ready for anything the season throws your way whether you're staying in Fresno or Clovis for the Fresno County Blossom Trail, or you decided to take a day trip to the snowy mountains.
The weather in Fresno and Clovis is good for layering. Wear cozy sweaters, jackets, and comfortable shoes while exploring the city’s restaurants, shops, and attractions.
For Exploring Fresno and Clovis
- Jacket and Sweater: Keep the parka at home, but you will need a thick sweater underneath a coat during our December-January months.
- Comfortable Shoes: Walking shoes or your favorite pair of boots are a go-to for locals. Leather boots are another great choice. Don't forget extra socks!
- Jeans or Casual Pants: Jeans are essential for the suitcase. But if you’re heading out for a nice dinner, consider adding leggings or tights under your dress or wearing slacks to stay cozy in the evening chill.
For A Snowy Day Trip
- Thermal Layers: A long-sleeve base layer and leggings to keep warm in the mountains
- Waterproof Jacket: Essential for snow, slush, or any unexpected weather
- Snow Boots: Waterproof boots with traction to handle icy or slushy conditions
- Wool Socks: Keep your feet warm and dry in colder weather
- Gloves and Beanie: To protect your hands and ears from the mountain chill
- Snow Pants (Optional): Perfect if you’re sledding, hiking, or playing in the snow
Favorite Spots To Visit During Winter
A few of our favorite places in the city or after a snow day adventure are Colton's Social House if you're looking for a bite to eat, Crow & Wolf Brewing Company for a taste of award-winning seltzers and beer, and Kuppa Joy is a well-loved coffee shop by locals that serve some of the best coffee and hot cocoa in Fresno County. If you're looking for things to do during your winter stay, The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is always a must-see attraction! Weekdays are less busy with fewer crowds, and if it's too cold for you or unexpected rain hits, no worries--the indoor reptile house is a way to see over 40 different species of reptiles and amphibians! If you're interested in festive activities, each year during the winter, The Fresno Chaffee Zoo's IllumiNature is a holiday event that runs from November through February 1. Check out here for more information.
