What started as a passion for coffee became something much bigger for RUMI Coffee. After three years of planning, learning and building, owner Hamed created a space where coffee, culture and community come together in Fresno County. After years of working a job that didn’t feel fulfilling, Hamed knew he wanted to build something around a passion of his own. While living in New York, he decided to move closer to family in Fresno County and create something that would bring a piece of his Yemeni culture to the community. Before opening a coffee shop, Hamed started by learning the craft of roasting coffee.
He purchased the building that would eventually become RUMI Coffee and first opened a roastery FABIANO, where he began developing his own approach to roasting beans. From there, Hamed began selling his roasted beans at farmers markets. He met locals, shared his coffee and built relationships within the community. Those conversations and connections became an important part of how he envisioned RUMI. Hamed eventually added a bakery, allowing him to make the baked goods he wanted to serve alongside his coffee. He says RUMI focuses on using natural ingredients, a philosophy you can taste in both the drinks and baked goods.
Try their Golden Date Latte, which balances the boldness of coffee with the natural sweetness of dates. The date adds sweetness without overpowering the coffee, a balance that makes the drink flavorful without feeling overly sweet. The baked goods follow that same approach, with rich flavors and ingredients like pistachio.
Today, the roastery and bakery supply RUMI Coffee, bringing everything together under one roof. Coffee beans are roasted in-house, baked goods come from the bakery, and the coffee shop brings it all together for customers. For Hamed, that full-circle approach is about more than simply running a successful business. It’s about creating something sustainable and making an impact in Fresno County.
A Coffee Shop Built With Intention
That thoughtfulness carries into the coffee shop itself. From the furniture to the atmosphere, Hamed wanted every detail to feel intentional. The tables are handmade rather than mass-produced, adding another layer of craftsmanship to a space built around quality. And while you’ll certainly find people enjoying their coffee, RUMI isn’t designed to be a place where everyone sits silently behind a laptop.
Hamed wants to bring back something he feels is becoming a lost art: socializing. Walk through the doors and you’ll hear it right away. The sound of conversation mixes with the hum of the coffee machines and the everyday hustle and bustle of a busy coffee shop. It feels lively, welcoming and, most importantly, connected. Hamed is often part of that atmosphere himself. You may find him chatting with customers while they wait in line, taking the time to get to know the people who walk through his doors. For him, those connections are part of the business.
